Today I was reminded of the impact that paying attention to my breath can have. As I went through my day, I periodically came back to this practice and found a sense of relief in it. Looking at the moments one by one instead of worrying about what could happen next made me feel more relaxed than when I’m caught up in anxious thoughts or plans for the future.
When something triggered fear or worry, rather than letting my mind spiral out of control with those thoughts, I paused and used focused breathing to bring me gently back into myself. Letting go of all expectations allowed me to just be present with whatever emotion had come up for me. By allowing space for these emotions without judgment or trying to change them, they eventually passed as if on their own accord – leaving from whence they came and taking any distress along with them every single time!
This experience has made me realize how important it is to be aware of our innermost feelings; however uncomfortable they may feel at first. Breath-centered practices are an invaluable resource during these times as not only do you gain invaluable insight but you also access a place within that feels safe and secure no matter what external storms appear on your horizon.
